PSHE/RSE Lead
According to the National Curriculum, every school needs to have a broad and balanced curriculum that:
• promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school;
• prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life;
• promotes British values.
From September 2020, primary schools in England also need to teach Relationships and Health Education as compulsory subjects and the Department for Education strongly recommends this should also include age-appropriate Sex Education.
Intent
We know at BB that PSHE and SRE are fundamental to the development of the individual potential in all our children. We recognise it as crucial to our children’s development as responsible, confident, happy and considerate people. PSHE provides young children with the skills to reflect upon themselves and their behaviour towards others and it will aid each child in raising their self-respect, self-awareness and encouraging them to become engaged members of their community – both in and out of school – and to be accountable for their actions.
Implementation
The Jigsaw scheme is based upon a whole school approach to PSHE which is progressive and sequential. Every year group works on the same theme each half term; this enables the learning message to be reinforced through whole school activities, such as assemblies, allowing for themes to be shared and celebrated.
Mindfulness activities are key components of the Jigsaw PSHE lessons. The children reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling issues that are part of growing up. The Jigsaw lessons help the children develop their self-belief, realise their value and encourages them to become increasingly responsible for their own learning. In addition, the children develop an understanding of their place within the wider community, and are taught how to resolve conflicts, develop collaboration skills and respect for others.
There are six jigsaw puzzle pieces of learning – Being me in my world, Celebrating differences, Dreams and Goals, Healthy me, Relationships and Changing me. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people of the world.
Impact
Children will be able to demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Liberty. They will also demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school and this is evident in the good behaviour seen across the school, both in the school and the playground. Pupil's voice is used to measure children’s understanding. The enhancements mean that Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, will acquire our children with the skills to have an understanding of the world, their ability to communicate their feelings understand and have the skills to cope with issues like internet safety and body image. We also acquire the children of BB school, an understanding, and experiences of British values that are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect other, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British citizen. Furthermore, the impact of our PSHE provision can be seen in the children’s social interactions, after-school club attendance and school counsellors.
Relationships & Sex Education ( RSE)
An important part of the Jigsaw PSHE programme is delivered through the 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me' puzzle pieces which are covered in the summer term.
- To enable children to understand and respect their bodies
- To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development
- To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image
- To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.
Each year group will be taught appropriate to their age and developmental stage. At no point will a child be taught something that is inappropriate; and if a question from a child arises and the teacher feels it would be inappropriate to answer, (for example, because of its mature or explicit nature), this information with be shared with you by your child’s class teacher. The question will not be answered to the child or class if it is outside the remit of that year group’s programme.
Below is a summary of RSE coverage within the Jigsaw scheme for each year group:
Foundation Stage - Growing up: how we have changed since we were babies
Year 1 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; naming body parts
Year 2 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; body parts and respecting privacy (which parts of the body are private and why this is).
Year 3 - How babies grow and how boys’ and girls’ bodies change as they grow older.
Year 4 - Internal and external reproductive body parts, body changes in girls and menstruation.
Year 5 - Puberty for boys and girls, and conception.
Year 6 - Puberty for boys and girls and understanding conception to birth of a baby
