Little Lambs - Year 2

Mrs Lowe

Teacher

I have so many favourite books and I read at least one new book a week! I love going to the library and discovering a new world each time I start a story. My absolute favourites are the Harry Potter books and I re-read them every year. I have such fond memories of each book coming out and getting excited to see what was going to happen next. I loved the idea of receiving a letter when you turned 11 to find out you had magical powers! My favourite book in the series is Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban because I love the part where Harry and Hermione travel back in time to save Sirius. I wouldn't be able to pick a favourite character because there are so many I love but my favourite professor is Professor McGonagall!

There is something so special about getting lost in the pages of a good book. I love reading. My favourite thing to do is to curl up under a blanket with a good book and a hot chocolate. When I was young, I used to love reading 'The Secret Seven' and 'The Famous Five' books by Enid Blyton. Now I'm older I still enjoy reading mystery novels. My favourite grown up book is 'The Night Circus' by Erin Morgenstern.

My favourite children's book is The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson because I love to read it to the children in my class. It is always one of their favourites and they love to listen to the story and look at the illustrations.

Spring 1

Welcome back after the Christmas holidays! The title for Spring 1 is ‘Towers, turrets and tunnels’.

In History we will be focusing on life in a castle in the past, and how this compares with life in a castle now and how people used to defend and attack castles.

In Geography we will be thinking about where we would build a castle, in order to do this we will think about rural and urban features.

In Science, we will be focusing on different materials, we will name different materials, think about their properties and then select materials based on their suitability for different things. We will then think about what we have learned to answer the question ‘Which material would you use to build a castle?’

In Design Technology, we will be thinking about how to create an effective catapult. We will then design, make and evaluate our own catapults.

Phonics and spelling will be taught daily alongside our English lessons. This half term we will be looking at the book ‘The dragon machine’. We will be focusing on expanded noun phrases and the four different sentence types. The outcome for our unit will be to retell the story of ‘The dragon machine’.

In maths, we will follow the White Rose scheme of work. Our focus will be on shape, money and then we will start our multiplication and division unit. We will be continually reviewing our arithmetic methods throughout the half term through our ‘fluency in five’ sessions.

In Music, we will be completing our next ‘charanga’ unit called ‘Your imagination’, throughout the unit we will be learning the song, learning to listen and appraise different pieces of music and will take part in musical activities to ensure we keep the pulse and have warmed up our vocal chords before singing. The end point of this song will be to perform the song vocally and to use the glockenspiels to play the notes of C, G and E.

In P.E, we will be focusing on our physical literacy. We will be learning to throw a ball towards a target, throwing a beanbag underarm towards a target, catching, and bouncing a ball. These skills will then be used to complete a circuit at the end of our unit.

In R.E. we will exploring the question: ‘Who is Muslim and how do they live?’ We will focus on the Muslim belief about God and the prophet Muhammad and how Muhammad teaches Muslims how to live.

In computing, we will be using ‘2count’ on purplemash to create pictograms to show the results of an experiment and we will also create our own block graphs.  We will also be using ‘2calculate’ to focus on spreadsheets.

In PSHE, we will thinking about setting goals for ourselves. We will focus on working with others to achieve a goal, and the importance of teamwork. We will also think about how we share our successes with other people.
