Hope - Year 6

My absolute favourite book is The Magic Faraway Tree, written by Enid Blyton. I have such fond memories of reading this as a little girl, imagining that I too would climb to the top-most branches of the tree in search of a different and exciting world. The book follows 3 children who discover new worlds; sometimes they would have wonderful adventures, other times they would get themselves into a bit of a pickle! My favourite character has to be the Saucepan Man with his funny hearing and of course Moonface. How amazing it would be to slide down his slippery-slip! Now, my own children are reading this book and I hope it will create some wonderful memories for them too

My favourite book is Black Beauty by Anna sewell. Having been an avid horse rider for most of my life, I was over the moon when I first discovered this book when I was around ten years old. I remember the excitement of turning the first page and feeling like I was being transported back in time to something quite magical. Black Beauty is a touching story told from the view point of a black horse who recounts the tales of his life. From his simple beginnings as a foal in a meadow through the ups and downs and twists and turns, Black Beauty tells his own story which illustrates the importance of kindness towards animals. I have read this book so many times and I can honestly say that the more I read it, the better it gets!

I love to read! My favourite book of all time is The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame. I remember loving it when it was read to me and I have read it to my own children too.

Spring 2

We are officially half way through the year – where has the time gone! This half term our topic is ‘Unsinkable?’ where we will be discovering the true and tragic story of the Titanic and its debut journey to America. By the end of the topic, we will be able to talk about why we think so many lives were lost and how this affected the future of sea travel.

Our RE learning is based around the concept of Salvation. In the lead up to Easter, we will thinking about Jesus’ death and subsequent resurrection and considering why this is a cause for celebration for Christians and how Jesus’ actions impact on the world today.

In computing, we will be going on a text adventure! We will find out what a text adventure is and plan our own story based adventures using 2Create.

In PE, we will be dancing through the decades. The unit covers the 1960s to the 2010s, looking at key dance styles from each decade.

Our science topic is Properties and Changes of Materials. By the end of this unit, we will be able to compare and group materials, suggest materials for given purposes (and explain why these may be suitable), explain the process of dissolving and sort materials based on solubility, separate mixtures using different processes and, finally, explain the difference between reversible and irreversible reactions.

Continuing with our Jigsaw units for PSHE, our topic this half term is called Healthy Me. In Year 5, we will thinking about the risks of smoking and alcohol misuse, how the media (including social media) can promote body types and the different attitudes people can have to food. Year 6 children will be thinking about how they can take responsibility for their own health, the different types of drugs and their uses and how some people can be exploited and made to do things that are against the law.

Our next unit in music is called ‘Connect Us’. This unit has a rock theme and we will be learning the songs Let’s Rock, Simple Gifts and Friendship. Alongside this, children will have the opportunity to compose their own songs using the glockenspiels and throughout the unit will be using the notes G A B♭ C D C♯, E, F♯, G♯.

Finally, in French Year 5’s will be learning about the weather (including being able to give their own weather report complete with temperatures) and Year 6’s will be learning about music and television, giving their own opinion about TV program.
